London City Airport
The station at the London City Airport is part of the Docklands Light Railway and was recently opened in 2005. The station is in the Borough of Newham with two platforms and is in zone 3. The trains run from Pontoon Dock going on to Bank or Tower Gateway. After leaving London City Airport stop the train then goes on to Woolwich Arsenal where it terminates.
Before this station passengers would have to take the Overground train system to Canning Town and then proceed south east by bus or foot. Now with the King George V branch the route can go further south. These trains take the passengers past other DLR stations en route to the London City Airport station; West Silvertown and the Pontoon Dock station are on this route as well.
The station is elevated and covered from the elements. The station has two entrances to serve its passengers and the platforms can be reached from either entrance by way of escalators or lifts. This will lead the departing passengers to the concourse of the airport. There is provision for handicapped persons and local travellers to board the train through a different entrance.
The trains from two other locations can change direction here because of a crossover which has been installed. If a passenger is travelling west they can get a train every few minutes. Approximately every ten minutes a train runs to Bank. Seven minutes will get you to Canning Town where you can change to the Beckton branch DLR or pick up the Jubilee Line. Poplar is twelve minutes with a connection to the Stratford and Lewisham DLR. If you commute often and need some portable storage, look at a solid state drive vs hard drive.
If you need to go east trains will take them to King George V about every ten minutes. This is a very short ride as it takes only around two minutes. The Drew Primary School is just a little ways from the station and has been in existence for over a hundred years.
There are many hotels in this area of the airport so you can stay very near if you just need a hotel for the night before you leave. There are many more that are a bit further away closer to the new Docklands area. When you are looking for attractions these hotels are near; you can take in the Millennium Dome or O2 as it is now called. The Canary Wharf area with its views of the Thames and shopping centre and the Excel Exhibition Centre are all served by DLR stops. You should also be able to find taxis or buses to get you to these destinations.
The restaurants in the area of the hotels are varied and will suit anyone’s appetite; you can get food at the airport if you need to as well. If you are looking for a place for a longer term stay there are some new apartment buildings that have been built since the Docklands area has been developed. All apartments have the latest in facilities and design.
